Infertility is the term used by doctors to indicate a situation in which women can not become pregnant and men are unable to impregnate a woman, after trying for at least one year. There is talk of female infertility for women of childbearing age who are unable to get pregnant. Women approaching menopause or already in menopause, are not defined as sterile. Causes Infertility does not have a single cause. In order for a pregnancy come to term, a precise chain of events need to take place. For a pregnancy to be successful, you need the following factors: The female ovaries must be able to produce a viable ovum, which must then be travel down the fallopian tubes. The man must be able to ejaculate and his sperm must be able to reach the fallopian tubes. The sperm and egg must unite for fertilization to take place. The fertilized egg must be able to attach and implant in the uterus and must be nurtured by the body. This is the only way a fetus can develops and grow until the child is ready to be born. If you experience occasional problems in any of the above aspects, you may be able to discuss infertility. Infertility is not selective. The cause of infertility can be male or female. It can be caused by unknown factors or a combination of different factors. Environmental factors can also be the cause in some cases. Genetic diseases or health problems are also known causes of infertility. In some instances, doctors are unable to identify the causes of male (or female) infertility and for a few established causes of infertility, there are no effective treatments. Female Infertility In order for a women to be fertile, several conditions need to work simultaneously. If even one of these is not verified or does not occur during the necessary period of time there can be no pregnancy, or the pregnancy may be terminated before the birth. Most infertility problems in women are caused by ovulatory problems, including diseases affecting ovulation. These include: Early menopause – This takes place when the ovaries stop working before normal age menopause should begin. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – This is when the ovaries do not release an egg regularly or do not produce a healthy egg. The uterus of women who have PCOS may not be healthy or ready to receive the fertilized ovum, thus causing infertility. Fallopian tubes that are blocked due to endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease or surgery also causes infertility. Physiological problems of the uterine wall or uterine fibroids may also be a cause. The risk of infertility in women increases due to certain environmental and life-style factors like: age, stress, inadequate diet, overweight or underweight, smoking, consumption of drugs or alcohol, drug therapies, environmental toxins, genetic diseases, other health problems, such as sexually transmitted diseases. Male Infertility In order for a man to be fertile his seminal fluid (semen) must be ready to perform its function, that is, to reach the egg and fertilize it. At first glance, the process may seem easier than female fertility. However, for male fertility to exist, certain conditions need to occur: The male needs to have an erection and maintain it and produce sperm in sufficient quantities. He must have a sufficient amount of semen so that sperm can reach the egg and produce functional sperm that are moving in the right way. If only one of these conditions is not right, this contributes to cause infertility. Male Infertility can also be caused by: Physical problems, testes that are unable to produce sperm in sufficient quantity. Hormonal problems. factors related to environment and lifestyle, like: uage, stress, smoking, consumption of drugs or alcohol, drug therapies, environmental toxins, genetic disorders such as Klinefelter syndrome, other health problems. exposure of the testes to high temperatures, which cause the sperm to be less mobile and have therefore more difficulty in fertilizing the ovary. For example cryptorchidism is the disease in which the testes do not descend into the scrotum correctly, although they usually do not affect the ability to obtain and maintain an erection, cryptorchidism means that the testes are located within the body, which has a temperature higher compared to the scrotum. If men, wear underwear that is too tight, this can increase the temperature of the testicles.
